In September 1981, the United Nations General Assembly organized the International Day of Peace.  The intent was to ‘provide a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to peace above all differences and to contribute to building a culture of peace.’

This year’s theme is ‘Recovering Better for an Equitable and Sustainable World’. In selecting this theme the UN hopes to inspire people to think creatively and collectively about how we can make our world more inclusive, equitable, sustainable, and healthier. On this day the organizers are hoping for a 24-hour cease-fire in all warring areas of the world. They are encouraging cooperation in cross-border projects. Finally, they are asking people to act compassionately toward all suffering as a result of the global pandemic.
