The sessions on this third day of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW63) continued with dialogue and discussion (general and focused), the sharing of experiences and learnings, in various formats and locations in and around the United Nations. Among the topics was the review theme, women’s empowerment and the link to sustainable development.
Our SSND delegates attended various sessions.
Sister Eileen attended a session on child marriage which highlighted the prevalence of this practice around the world. Education of girls and their parents is seen as one of the major ways of reducing child marriage.
Sister Andrea, Anilse, Sister Beatriz, and Sister Mirian attended the session “women and girl-child empowerment: A key to Sustainable Development” in the United Nations Church Center.
At one side event, the high-level intergenerational dialogue, youth leaders from around the world spoke of a set of “common minimum standards” which came out of discussions by over 500 youth and which they have presented for consideration at CSW63. They called “on governments to ensure that social protection, public services and sustainable infrastructure meet the needs of young people and advance gender equality through these common minimum standards.” (More in UN news)
Another side event, private sector wisdom to crack gender equality, acknowledged that although governments can successfully create policies to establish gender equality, these are often limited to the public sphere. Those in the private sector and in elected positions sometimes need a different approach to overcome the challenges of gender bias and inequality. Representatives from various companies shared different models and approaches that have worked for them. (UN Web TV link)
