The World Day of the Sick was introduced by Pope John Paul II. He believed that it was a way for as a way for believers to offer prayers for those suffering from illnesses. It provides the opportunity for all to recognize those who work in the health care ministries. It provides an opportunity to reflect on caring for those who are sick as well as those who care for them. This observance shares the day as the commemoration of Our Lady of Lourdes. Many people have traveled to Lourdes praying for cures and have been cured.
