Since 1969 Silver Jubilarians spent part of a summer in Rome engaged in a spiritual renewal program. They used the Generalate as a base and then went out to faith sites around Rome, to a papal Mass and an audience with the Pope. Beyond Rome, the sisters spent three days in Assisi, four days in Munich/Regensburg/Neunburg vorm Wald, and Dachau. This was such an enriching experience, that it became part of the life province. Some provinces opened opportunities for sisters to travel to family or sites in Europe. During the summer of 1973, Mother Georgianne gave the opening address in which she urged the sisters to be pilgrims rather than tourists.[1]

The data regarding participants in the English-speaking renewal program is given below.

  • 1969–1977: 803 sisters
  • 1978–1982: 723 sisters
  • 1983–1987: 743 sisters
  • By 1987, 2,269 English-speaking SSNDs had been pilgrims to Rome and Munich.
