International Literacy Day takes place on September 8 every year to raise awareness and concern over literacy problems that exist within local communities as well as globally. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in 1966 set a goal “to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights.”  UNESCO is not offering a simple solution. Rather it holds that each community accepts ownership of the challenges of illiteracy,  for literacy begins, one person at a time.
