On March 19, Italians celebrate the feast of St. Joseph and Father’s Day. (The feast of St. Joseph is more prominent in Southern Italy, particularly Sicily, where he is the Patron Saint.) On this day, the women bake a great variety of breads. which they bring bread to Mass. The celebrant blesses the bakery and it is placed on a side altar for all who are hungry to take and eat. In their homes, social club, and cafes, they set up a St. Joseph’s Table” A statue of St. Joseph is at the head of the table which is filled with gifts, both food and sentimental ones, offered in thanksgiving for prayers answered.
