Alix Le Clerc (2 February 1576 – January 1622),  was the founder of the Canonesses of St. Augustine of the Congregation of Our Lady (French: Notre-Dame). The congregation she established sought to provide education to girls regardless of their ability to pay. In taking this action she also challenged the thinking that women religious could take an active apostolic role out of the convent and remain true to their vows. Many parents were among those skeptical of her ideas until they saw a positive change in their daughters. After her death the movement to have her beatified was delayed by the French Revolution and the loss of her body, the political problem in France, World War I, and World War II.  Finally, Le Clerc was beatified by the Catholic Church in 1947.
