Season of Creation, Week 1: Africa

Over the next few weeks we will highlight various ways our Sisters creatively promote “peace with creation” in support of our congregational Laudato Si’ commitment in the SSND spirit of Shalom. Below we share some photos of Sisters’ activities in Africa.

  • Sr. Patience  engaged in organic gardening.  Sisters in Africa are committed to living simply, responsibly, and sustainably in the spirit of Laudato Si’ by recycling, organic gardening, energy and water conservation practices, using public transportation and much more.
  • Sr. Magdalene giving a presentation on Laudato Si’.  Sisters are educators in all they do, taking the opportunity where they can to promote awareness of the interrelationship of all God’s creation and the role we can play in supporting all of life.  Five SSNDs in Africa have received certification as Laudato Si animators.
  • Sr. Margaret with Sr. Sarah wearing a Stop Trafficking shirt.  Five SSNDs have received human trafficking related awareness training.  They work to promote awareness and engagement of our sisters and others in their communities to address this critical concern of human dignity.
  • Sisters and students come together to pray for peace.  On the International Day for Peace (September 21), and at various times throughout the year, sisters engage with others in community prayer for peace.  Peace with each other and all of creation.
  • Sr. Ruth giving a trauma workshop in South Sudan.
  • Sr. Nancy with students planting a tree in The Gambia.  Our sisters throughout Africa engage students in tree plantings and other actions to promote care for our common home and understanding our inter-relationship with all of God’s creation.
